Fourteen Precepts of the Order of Interbeing

Fourteen Precepts of the Order of Interbeing
(Original Fourteen Mindfulness Trainings)

1.  Do not be idolatrous about or bound to any doctrine, theory, or ideology, even Buddhist ones. Buddhist systems of thought are guiding means; they are not absolute truth.

2.  Do not think the knowledge you presently possess is changeless, absolute truth. Avoid being narrow-minded and bound to present views. Learn and practice nonattachment from views in order to be open to receive others’ viewpoints. Truth is found in life and not merely in conceptual knowledge. Be ready to learn throughout your entire life and to observe reality in yourself and in the world at all times.

3.  Do not force others, including children, by any means whatsoever, to adopt your views, whether by authority, threat, money, propaganda, or even education. However, through compassionate dialogue, help others renounce fanaticism and narrowness.

4.  Do not avoid contact with suffering or close your eyes before suffering. Do not lose awareness of the existence of suffering in the life of the world. Find ways to be with those who are suffering, including personal contact, images, and sound. By such means, awaken yourself and others to the reality of suffering in the world.

5.  Do not accumulate wealth while millions are hungry. Do not take as the aim of your life fame, profit, wealth, or sensual pleasure. Live simply and share time, energy, and material resources with those who are in need.

6.  Do not maintain anger or hatred. Learn to penetrate and transform them when they are still seeds in your consciousness. As soon as they arise, turn your attention to your breath in order to see and understand the nature of your anger and hatred and the nature of the persons who have caused your anger and hatred.

7.  Do not lose yourself in dispersion and in your surroundings. Practice mindful breathing to come back to what is happening in the present moment. Be in touch with what is wondrous, refreshing, and healing both inside and around you. Plant seeds of joy, peace, and understanding in yourself in order to facilitate the work of transformation in the depths of your consciousness.

8.  Do not utter words that can create discord and cause the community to break. Make every effort to reconcile and resolve all conflicts, however small.

9.  Do not say untruthful things for the sake of personal interest or to impress people. Do not utter words that cause division and hatred. Do not spread news that you do not know to be certain. Do not criticize or condemn things of which you are not sure. Always speak truthfully and constructively. Have the courage to speak out about situations of injustice, even when doing so may threaten your own safety.

10.  Do not use the Buddhist community for personal gain or profit, or transform your community into a political party. A religious community, however, should take a clear stand against oppression and injustice and should strive to change the situation without engaging in partisan conflicts.

11.  Do not live with a vocation that is harmful to humans and nature. Do not invest in companies that deprive others of their chance to live. Select a vocation that helps realize your ideal of compassion.

12.  Do not kill. Do not let others kill. Find whatever means possible to protect life and prevent war.

13.  Possess nothing that should belong to others. Respect the property of others, but prevent others from profiting from human suffering or the suffering of other species on Earth.

14.  Do not mistreat your body. Learn to handle it with respect. Preserve vital energies (sexual, breath, spirit) for the realization of the Way. Be fully aware of the responsibility of bringing new lives into the world. Meditate on the world into which you are bringing new beings.

(My commentary)
In 1963, Thich Nhat Hanh renewed the precepts for Buddhist monks and nuns formulated 2,500 years ago, and wrote the above Fourteen Precepts that he felt carried the deepest teachings of the Buddha and would be fit for the times. And this Fourteen Precepts of the Order of Interbeing (Original Fourteen Mindfulness Trainings) was renewed and the latest version is as below. But I feel the original version is still alive and simple. And I also feel that the most important message to remember is mindfulness because everything starts from mindfulness. Therefore, our mindful actions such as mindful breathing, sitting and walking are vital in our daily life.

http://compassion5151.blogspot.jp/2015/10/blog-post_28.html

16 exercises on mindful breathing (whole picture)

The whole picture of "16 exercises on mindful breathing" is the following. Please refer to:
http://compassion5151.blogspot.jp/2015/10/16-exercises-on-mindful-breathing.html

1-4: Body
(1-2): Revive awareness through conscious breathing (return to true self by stopping thinking, perception)
(3-4): Be aware of the pain in the whole body + Release the tension in the whole body (check your body condition and relax)

5-8: Feelings
(5-6): Generate joy and happiness by touching the wonders of life (check whether you are mindful)
(7-8): Be aware of the feelings + Calm the feelings (check your emotional condition and calm down)

9-12: Mind (mental formations + consciousness)
(9-10): Be aware of the mental formations and the seeds in store consciousness + Water the wholesome seeds (selective watering to the wholesome seeds)
(11-12): Concentrate the mind + Liberate the mind (look deeply into the unwholesome mind, understand the root cause, and transform the unwholesome mind and seeds)

13-16: Objects of Mind (dharmas = perceptions)
(13-14): Observe the impermanent nature of all objects of mind, perceptions + Be convinced of impermanence by observing the disappearance of cravings, ideas (attain insight of impermanence)
(15-16): Observe the no birth, no death nature of all phenomena + observe letting go of all notions (attain insight of no self, throw away all notions, attain full enlightenment)

* Notes:
1) Humans are made of 5 aggregates (skandhas).
 ① body (form)
 ② feelings (emotions)
 ③ perception (idea, thought)
 ④ mental formations (51)
⑤ consciousness (5 senses, mind, manas, store)
16 exercises on mindful breathing is for taking good care of these 5 aggregates (skandhas). And finally we will be able to attain full enlightenment.

2) Body
The first four (1-4) exercises are the mindful breathing for the body.
(1-2): Nurturing the positive condition of the body
Breath is regarded as the body. If we (ego) concentrate on our breathing, we can stop thinking, or perception. So, awareness revives. We take good care of our perception here.
(3-4): Caring the negative condition of the body
We take good care of our pain in the body here.

3) Feelings
The next four (5-8) exercises are the mindful breathing for the feelings.
(5-6): Nurturing the positive condition of the feelings
We feel joyful and happy when we are mindful, because we can touch the wonders of life. Because joy and happiness arise right after conscious breathing, in chronological order (5-6) comes right after (1-2). So, we can check whether we are breathing correctly here.
(7-8): Caring the negative condition of the feelings
We take good care of our painful feelings here.

4) Mind
The next four (9-12) exercises are the mindful breathing for the mind (mental formations + consciousness).
(9-10): Nurturing the positive condition of the mind (mental formations + consciousness)
We recognize the wholesome seeds in store consciousness and water them for the manifestation of the wholesome mental formations. The difference between (5-6) and (9-10) is that (5-6) is recognizing the manifested mental formations and (9-10) is the selective watering for the future manifestation of the wholesome mental formations. So, we take good care of our consciousness and future mental formations here.
(11-12):  Caring the negative condition of the mind (mental formations + consciousness)
We take good care of our unwholesome mental formations here.  (7-8) is only to recognize, embrace and relieve our painful feelings. But (11-12) includes looking deeply into the manifested unwholesome mental formations, understanding the root cause, transforming them by the energy of compassion, and return the transformed seeds into the store consciousness. So, we take good care of our unwholesome mental formations and consciousness deeply here.

5) Objects of Mind
The last four (13-16) exercises are the mindful breathing for the objects of mind (perceptions). We temporarily stop thinking, or perception by (1-2) but here we throw away all perceptions by understanding the true nature eternally.
(13-14): Understanding the impermanent nature of all perceptions
We understand impermanence which means interbeing (emptiness) in terms of time.
(15-16): Understanding the no self nature of all perceptions, and letting go
We throw away all notions by understanding the no birth, no death nature, or 'no self' which means interbeing (emptiness) in terms of space. We attain full enlightenment, or nirvana through the extinction of all notions.

Object of Mind (dharma)

Thay said, "To meditate is to be aware of what is going on, not only in your body, your feeling, your perceptions, but in the world. Because the world is object of your mind."

(My commentary 1)
The world is object of our mind if we think. And object of our mind is our mind because object of our mind is the projection of our mind. The perceived is the perceiver. So, the world is our mind, the projection of our mind, our perception, our idea, our thinking, or illusions. We must also be aware that we need to meditate what is going on both inside and around us. In other words, we meditate not only our inside (the noumenal world) but also our outside (the phenomenal world) without thinking.

David Bohm said, "The way we see depends on the way we think. ... Consciousness is much more important than money. Change in consciousness is essential."

(My commentary 2)
The explanation of this world is exactly the same between Thay and David Bohm (a famous quantum physicist). I understand that the change in consciousness means the transformation of the seeds of mental formation in consciousness. In short,
if we succeed in transforming the unwholesome seeds to the wholesome seeds, we can be happy. (We can't be happy by money.) That's because our perceptions, or thoughts are based on our feelings. And our actions are based on our thoughts, or volition (motivation). Moreover, I understand that the change in consciousness means the transformation of self from ego (separate self) to awareness (non-separate self). That's because ego thinks and awareness attains insight without thinking.

Sister Chan Khong said, "Because if you are quiet, your mind is like still water of the pond, and you can reflect the moon properly."

(My commentary 3)
If the surface of water of the pond is wavy, it can't reflect as they are. But if the water of the pond is calm, it can reflect as they are. The same thing can be said to our mind. If we stop thinking, our mind will be calm like still water of the pond. Then our mind can reflect as they are. So, true nature of reality can be touched only if we stop thinking. That's why we meditate. That's why we revive awareness through mindfulness and attain insight.
