Brain & Emotions

"In order to understand the way our brains behave, we can observe our emotions and their effects. In the past, it seemed as though science and spirituality were opposed to each other. However, it’s not a useful division to maintain, because the one tradition deals with knowledge of the material world and the other with the inner world of the mind; we need to know about both." (From His Holiness the Dalai Lama's facebook on January 21, 2014)
Cf. https://www.facebook.com/DalaiLama/posts/10151896533482616?stream_ref=10

Science is now finding out the brain mechanism and spirituality is already aware about emotions and their effects. Scientific findings will prove wisdom of spirituality.(My commentary)
Cf. http://www.slideshare.net/compassion5151/mind-training-3

Self-centeredness

"Now we’re so interdependent, we need to build trust and confidence. On a national or personal level self-centeredness is a source of trouble."
(From His Holiness the Dalai Lama's tweet on January 21, 2014)
Cf. https://twitter.com/DalaiLama/status/425575843843174401

Self-centeredness arises from ignorance of interdependence. If we are aware that our survival and future entirely depends on others, we can't be self-centered. Instead, cooperation is vital. For that, we need to practice compassion. (My commentary)
Cf. http://www.slideshare.net/compassion5151/mechanism-of-mind

Action 行動

"You can’t help someone just by making a wish to do so, you have to take action."
(From His Holiness the Dalai Lama's tweet on January 17, 2014)
Cf. https://twitter.com/DalaiLama/status/424125936674410497

Action is vital. (My commentary)
Cf. http://www.slideshare.net/compassion5151/mechanism-of-mind

Non-violence

"I consider non-violence to be compassion in action. It doesn’t mean weakness, cowering in fear, or simply doing nothing. It is to act without violence, motivated by compassion, recognising the rights of others." (From His Holiness the Dalai Lama's facebook on January 13, 2014)
Cf. https://www.facebook.com/DalaiLama/posts/10151882242582616?stream_ref=10

Non-violence is a sign of strength. Violence creates endless violence.(My commentary)
Cf. http://www.slideshare.net/compassion5151/violence-english

One humanity 1

"We need a sense of belonging to one humanity, respecting the rights and views of others."
(From His Holiness the Dalai Lama's tweet on January 13, 2014)
Cf. https://twitter.com/DalaiLama/status/422676846614818816

This means that we should love everybody. If we love separately, it isn't a real love. (My commentary)
Cf. http://www.slideshare.net/compassion5151/mechanism-of-mind

Self-love

Very painful ego appears all of a sudden unconsciously and repeatedly. Even though we are aware that ego is the source of sufferings and that unconditional love and compassion is the source of happiness, ego appears.

How can we cope with ego? First of all, self-love is critical. Developing unconditional love and compassion to others is the next step.

Helping others 人助け

"If you dedicate yourself to helping others, you’ll be happier."
(From His Holiness the Dalai Lama's tweet on January 9, 2014)
Cf. https://twitter.com/DalaiLama/status/421226909557469185

Compassionate actions will be the causes of happiness. On the other hand, self-centered actions will be the causes of sufferings.
Cf. http://www.slideshare.net/compassion5151/mechanism-of-mind

Cherishing

Cherishing only oneself is the cause of all sufferings.
Cherishing others is the cause of all happiness.

Transformation of humanity

"We can only transform humanity and create a happier more compassionate world through education."
(From His Holiness the Dalai Lama's tweet on January 6, 2014)
Cf. https://twitter.com/DalaiLama/status/420139259287191552

Transformation of humanity means the transformation from self-centered and independent self to altruistic and interdependent self. Education means secular ethics education which teaches mind system and the method to control emotions.
Cf. http://www.slideshare.net/compassion5151/spiritual-revolution-english-13770802
http://www.slideshare.net/compassion5151/transformation-of-mind-english

Anger & Attachment

"There needs to be understanding that anger never helps to solve a problem. It destroys our peace of mind and blinds our ability to think clearly. Anger and attachment are emotions that distort our view of reality." (From His Holiness the Dalai Lama's facebook on January 6, 2014)
Cf. https://www.facebook.com/DalaiLama/posts/10151870498762616

Reality does not exist as it appears. That's because we can't see the reality due to mental projections by attachment and anger. We see only appearance, or illusions by attachment and anger. In order to see the reality, we need holistic view through calm mind.(My commentary)
Cf. http://www.slideshare.net/compassion5151/anger-control-english
http://www.slideshare.net/compassion5151/love-or-attachment-english

Rebirth 再生

Body & mind (material) and consciousness (spirit) seem to exist separately. Of course, consciousness, mind (brain) and body are interconnected when alive. But when we die, our body and brain will decay but our consciousness will leave our body and look for the next body to enter. In this sense, our body & mind come from our parents but our consciousness may come from different place.

body & mind (brain) = Material
consciousness = Spirit
↓ ↑ (never ending rebirth till Buddhahood)
body & mind (material) + consciousness (spirit) = Humans

Emptiness 空性

"Form is emptiness. Emptiness is Form." is written in Heart Sutra and it means Interdependence is the foundation of existence. Every thing and phenomena on this planet is interdependent. Nothing can exist without interdependence on this planet.

Emptiness means absense of independent existence or self. Buddhism denies independent self by selflessness but accepts interdependent self. Human consciousness can hold either one of them. In Buddhism, self is a mere designation to the combination of the subtle body and the subtle mind.

Dependent origination 縁起

In Buddhism, dependent origination means cause and effect. So, everything (incl. self) is dependently originated. This means that self came from previous self (cause) and will be next self (effect). Therefore, there is no beginning and no end. This self is subtle consciousness which imprints karma. Subtle consciousness is the space-time continuum.
