Emptiness and the Heart Sutra (2)

Please refer to my following blog on Oct. 9.
http://compassion5151.blogspot.jp/2016/10/emptiness-and-heart-sutra.html
I mentioned as follows:
Quote:
In the Heart Sutra, the following 4 lines are very famous.

Form is no other than emptiness.
Emptiness is no other than form.
Form is namely emptiness.
Emptiness is namely form.

But I feel that the following 4 lines are missing before the above 4 lines.

This is because that is.
Form is because space is.
Space is because form is.
Therefore,

So, it's better to replace emptiness with space as below to make it easier to understand.

Form is no other than space.
Space is no other than form.
Form is namely space.
Space is namely form.
:Unquote

The above is the ultimate truth in the phenomenal world, or the historical dimension. It has nothing to do with the noumenal world, or the ultimate dimension. Now I feel that the famous 4 lines in the Heart Sutra also explain the relation between the phenomenal world and the noumenal world as follows.

The phenomenal world is because the noumenal world is.
The noumenal world is because the phenomenal world is.
That's because the noumenal world unfolds into the phenomenal world (The phenomenal world is made of the noumenal world),
and the phenomenal world enfolds into the noumenal world (The noumenal world is made of the phenomenal world).

So, it's possible to replace form with the phenomenal world and to replace emptiness with the noumenal world in order to express the relation between the phenomenal world and the noumenal world as below.

The phenomenal world is no other than the noumenal world.
The noumenal world is no other than the phenomenal world.
The phenomenal world is namely the noumenal world.
The noumenal world is namely the phenomenal world.

The phenomenal world means this world, and the noumenal world means nirvana. So, finally the famous 4 lines in the Heart Sutra can be read as follows:

This world is no other than nirvana.
Nirvana is no other than this world.
This world is namely nirvana.
Nirvana is namely this world.

But there is "a big if" to be able to read the famous 4 lines in the Heart Sutra as above. Only if we revive awareness, or true self (non-separate self), we can really understand the true meaning of the famous 4 lines in the Heart Sutra. That's because only awareness can dwell in this world (the phenomenal world) and nirvana (the noumenal world) at the same time by transcending space and time. Those who are ego, or separate self can never understand the true meaning because they live only in the phenomenal world. Furthermore, the famous 4 lines in the Heart Sutra could be translated as follows:

Body is no other than alaya.
Alaya is no other than body.
Body is namely alaya.
Alaya is namely body.

Emptiness and the Heart Sutra

In the Heart Sutra, the following 4 lines are very famous.

Form is no other than emptiness.
Emptiness is no other than form.
Form is namely emptiness.
Emptiness is namely form.

But I feel that the following 4 lines are missing before the above 4 lines.

This is because that is.
Form is because space is.
Space is because form is.
Therefore,

So, it's better to replace emptiness with space as below to make it easier to understand.

Form is no other than space.
Space is no other than form.
Form is namely space.
Space is namely form.

The Buddha taught the formula of the ultimate truth of non-separation, non-discrimination, or the non-duality. Simply speaking, the Buddha's formula is that because A = non-A = B, A can exist. To the contrary, the formula of the conventional truth based on the duality is that because A ≠ non-A ≠ B, A can exist.

In other word, the Buddha's understanding is that all pairs of opposites in this phenomenal world are the two sides of the same coin. The followings are examples.

Light is because darkness is.
Right is because left is.
Above is because below is.
Birth is because death is.
Being is because nonbeing is.
Coming is because going is.
Beginning is because end is.
Sameness is because otherness is.
Happiness is because suffering is.
This is because that is.
A is because B is.
A is not possible without B.
A is made of non-A elements (= B).

A and B are all notions made up by human ego for self-protection. And all notions cause separation, discrimination, or the duality. That's why afflictions arise and people suffer. In this sense, all sufferings which arise from ignorance of human ego are our own creation. Therefore, we need to throw away all notions. When the extinction of all notions is attained, or when the duality is transcended and the non-duality is attained, we reach nirvana. So, emptiness is nothing but a skillful means to transcend the duality and attain non-duality. There is not separation, or discrimination anymore. But we must not forget to throw away the notion of emptiness upon attainment.

Awareness = Buddha

Read deeply the following article of "Love + Wisdom = Buddha" by LION'S ROAR STAFF.
http://www.lionsroar.com/love-wisdom-buddha/
The followings are the excerpts and my comments.

(Excerpt)
The Chinese, searching for a word that might translate shunyata, used the character for “sky.” All dharmas are empty like the sky—blue, beautiful, expansive, and always ready to receive a bird, a wind, a cloud, the sun, the moon, or an airplane.

(My comment)
I would say that "" means "space"  instead of “sky.” All dharmas (things = phenomena = objects of mind = perceptions) are, because space (空間) is. In other words, everything is empty of separate existence. Without space, nothing can exist.

(Excerpt)
All phenomena are products of dependent arising: that is the main point of the prajñaparamita teaching. This helps us to get in touch with the true nature of no birth/no death, no being/no non-being, etc., which is the true nature of all phenomena.

(My comment)
"Dependent arising", or "Interdependent co-arising" is the skillful means to transcend the duality. Because it is still based on the duality, it is still the ultimate truth in the historical dimension, or the phenomenal world. So, it is not the ultimate truth in the ultimate dimension (nirvana), or the noumenal world. Through "Interdependent co-arising", we can say that birth and death are two sides of the same coin but we can not say that there is no birth and no death. We can touch the true nature of reality only through the extinction of all notions, or nirvana.

(Excerpt)
This is a state of coolness, peace, and non-fear that can be experienced in this very life, in your own body and in your own five skandhas. It is nirvana

(My comment)
Non-fear can be attained through the extinction of all notions, or nirvana. So, we need to understand that birth and death are nothing but notions and all notions are wrong. And nirvana means the ultimate dimension, or the noumenal world without space and time. So, only awareness, non-separate self, true self, the Dharma (cosmic) body, or the Buddha nature can dwell in nirvana. Non-separation, non-discrimination, non-duality, or the wholeness is the nature of the ultimate dimension.

Conditioned dharma and Unconditioned dharma (3)

The followings are the First and the Second of Forty Tenets of Plum Village.

(First of Forty Tenets of Plum Village)
"Space is not an unconditioned dharma. It manifests together with timematter and consciousness."
(Space is not a separate existence. It is interdependent co-arising with time, matter and consciousness.)

(Second of Forty Tenets of Plum Village)
"In the historical dimensionevery dharma is a conditioned dharma. In the ultimate dimensionevery dharma is an unconditioned dharma."
(In the phenomenal world with space and time, everything or every phenomena is not a separate existence. It is interdependent co-arising with everything else. In the noumenal world without space and time, no separation is there and only the wholeness is there. So, every object of mind is unconditional.)

(My commentary)
2) The ultimate truth in the noumenal world (ultimate dimension)
"Non-separation or wholeness" is the ultimate truth in the noumenal world. There is no duality. So, there is no need to transcend the duality in the noumenal world, or the ultimate dimension. It is also called "Emptiness", "Voidness" in other words. In the noumenal world, there is no space and time. So, nothing can exist, and there are no pairs of opposites like birth and death because of the extinction of all notions. Only nature (Buddha nature, Divine nature, Awareness) can be there. The method to attain the non-duality here is the insight of the true nature of reality (wholeness). When we understand that the wholeness can't be cut into pieces by notions, we are convinced that all notions are wrong. All notions were created by human ego for separations. So, we can easily throw away all notions and attain the non-duality. This non-duality is different from the non-duality through "interdependent co-arising" in the phenomenal world. That's because there are no notions of A and B. Only the wholeness is there. The non-duality in the noumenal world is not based on the duality. "Non-separation or wholeness" must be the only and perfect way to attain the non-duality in the noumenal world.

In the Heart Sutra, the ultimate truth in the noumenal world (ultimate dimension) is described from "是故空中 (So, in emptiness)" till the end of "般若心経 (Heart Sutra)". Especially, the ultimate dimension is clearly mentioned by "無苦集滅道" (there is no suffering, there is no making of suffering, there is no secession of suffering, there is no path leading to secession of suffering). That's the ultimate dimension (noumenal world). There is no separation, discrimination, or the duality there. So, if we (awareness) dwell in the ultimate dimension, it is impossible for us to suffer.

Now you can understand the meaning of  "Suffering is impossible without separation." In the noumenal world (ultimate dimension), suffering is impossible. That's why there is no making (cause) of suffering, there is no secession (end) of suffering, there is no path (method) leading to secession of suffering.

Therefore, "Non-separation or wholeness" enables us to attain the perfect non-duality. We are all the same, as the whole cosmos. Not only humans but also all animals, plants and minerals are the same, as the whole cosmos. We can completely stop separating ourselves from others through this non-duality, or the wholeness. So, there is no space for any afflictions to arise. Therefore, we can completely liberate ourselves from sufferings

David Bohm explained the relation between the noumenal world and the phenomenal world as follows:
"In the enfolded [or implicate] order, space and time are no longer the dominant factors determining the relationships of dependence or independence of different elements. Rather, an entirely different sort of basic connection of elements is possible, from which our ordinary notions of space and time, along with those of separately existent material particles, are abstracted as forms derived from the deeper order. These ordinary notions in fact appear in what is called the "explicate" or "unfolded" order, which is a special and distinguished form contained within the general totality of all the implicate orders."

"The implicate, or the enfolded order unfolds into the explicate order, or everything separate. (The explicate, or the unfolded order enfolds into the implicate order.)"
【The historical dimension (phenomenal world) enfolds into the ultimate dimension (noumenal world). The ultimate dimension (noumenal world) unfolds into the historical dimension (phenomenal world).】

"Now, the implicate order would help us to see that, to see everything enfolds, everybody, not merely depends on everybody, but actually everybody is everybody in a deeper sense. See, we are the earth because all our substance comes from the earth and goes back.

So, if we touch the phenomenal world deeply, we can touch the noumenal world. It is amazing that the Buddha touched the noumenal world (ultimate dimension) 2,600 years ago and understood the wholeness (ultimate truth in the ultimate dimension), just like what David Bohm explained through quantum physics.

By the way, there is one more truth called "the conventional truth" in the phenomenal world (historical dimension). This truth is familiar to most of the people in their daily life. It is based on separation, discrimination, or the duality. They see everything as follows:
"A and B are two separate entities.
So, A is not B.
That's why A is A."

This dualistic view separates oneself from others. Afflictions arise from this separation and make them suffer. So, they need to transform their suffering to happiness. Now you can understand the meaning of  "Transform your suffering to happiness." And we need to remember that in the Four Noble Truths, all four truths are the conventional truths.

Conditioned dharma and Unconditioned dharma (2)

The followings are the First and the Second of Forty Tenets of Plum Village.

(First of Forty Tenets of Plum Village)
"Space is not an unconditioned dharma. It manifests together with timematter and consciousness."

(Second of Forty Tenets of Plum Village)
"In the historical dimensionevery dharma is a conditioned dharma. In the ultimate dimensionevery dharma is an unconditioned dharma."

(My commentary)
So, in the Heart Sutra, two types of the ultimate truth are described. One is the ultimate truth in the phenomenal world which is "interdependent co-arising". The other is the ultimate truth in the noumenal world which is "non-separation or wholeness"

1) The ultimate truth in the phenomenal world (historical dimension)
"Interdependent co-arising" is the skillful means to transcend the duality in the phenomenal world, or the historical dimension. It is also called "Emptiness", "Interbeing" in other words. In the phenomenal world, there is only the relative truth. So, there are pairs of opposites such as birth and death, right and left. The method to transcend the duality in order to attain the non-duality here is the two sides of the same coin. If we understand that A and B are two sides of the same coin, we can transcend the duality and attain the non-duality. This method may be a little tricky because A and B are not two but are not also one. But it can't be helped because all phenomena are based on the duality in the phenomenal world, or the historical dimension. "Interdependent co-arising" must be the only way to transcend the duality in the phenomenal world.

In the Heart Sutra, the ultimate truth in the phenomenal world (historical dimension) is described from the beginning of "観自在菩薩 (Avalokiteshvara)" till "不増不減 (no increasing and no decreasing)". And its logic is the following.
"A is made of non-A elements.
So, A is not A.
A is everything except for A.
So, A is no other than B.
Namely, A is B."

A can be liken to suffering and B can be liken to happiness.
"Suffering is made of non-suffering elements.
So, suffering is not suffering.
Suffering is everything except for suffering.
So, suffering is no other than happiness.
Namely, suffering is happiness."

Now you can understand the meaning of "Suffering is no other than happiness." Suffering and happiness are two sides of the same coin. So, if there is suffering, happiness must be there at the same time. All we need is to observe from different angle. Actually, when we suffer, we can find out happiness at the same time if we observe from different angle.

That's why "Interdependent co-arising" enables us to transcend separations, discrimination, or the duality. We can stop separating ourselves from others through this non-duality. So, there is no space for any afflictions to arise. Therefore, we can liberate ourselves from sufferings.

This formula is clearly mentioned in the Heart Sutra as follows:
色不異空: Form is no other than emptiness.
<That's because form is made of non-form elements, namely emptiness.>
空不異色: Emptiness is no other than form.
<That's because emptiness is made of non-emptiness elements, namely form.>
色即是空: Form is namely emptiness (empty of separate existence non-form elements).
空即是色: Emptiness (empty of separate existence non-form elements) is namely form.

In other words, A is made of non-A elements. So, A is no other than non-A. Namely, A is non-A.
Meanwhile, non-A is made of non-non-A elements. So, non-A is no other than non-non-A. Namely, non-A is A.

David Bohm explained more simply; "Everything is internally related to everything. Everything contains everything. The Buddha and David Bohm said the same thing. In this sense, Buddhism and quantum physics are very similar. All phenomena are conditioned because there are only relative truths in this phenomenal world, as Albert Einstein scientifically proved it by the general theory of relativity.

Conditioned dharma and Unconditioned dharma (1)

The followings are the First and the Second of Forty Tenets of Plum Village.

(First of Forty Tenets of Plum Village)
"Space is not an unconditioned dharma. It manifests together with time, matter and consciousness."

(Second of Forty Tenets of Plum Village)
"In the historical dimension, every dharma is a conditioned dharma. In the ultimate dimension, every dharma is an unconditioned dharma."

(My commentary)
Unconditioned dharma or the ultimate dimension (noumenal world) can't be described by notions. I understand that there are two types of the ultimate truth. The ultimate truth in the phenomenal world (interdependent co-arising) is conditioned. The ultimate truth in the noumenal world (non-separation or wholeness) is unconditioned because of the extinction of all notions. Both of them are non-duality but the meanings are different. The former non-duality is based on separation (notions), but the latter non-duality is based on non-separation (extinction of all notions). Nirvana is the extinction of all notions. So, we need to understand the ultimate truth in the noumenal world to attain full enlightenment.

The simplest explanation will be that all phenomena are conditioned because there are only relative truths in this phenomenal world. This is scientifically proved by the general theory of relativity of Albert Einstein.

If I add the conventional truth in the phenomenal world, there will be three truths. The conventional truth in the phenomenal world is also conditioned and is based on the duality. Here are three truths' examples.
(1) conventional truth in the phenomenal world: Transform your suffering to happiness.
(2) ultimate truth in the phenomenal world: Suffering is no other than happiness.
(3) ultimate truth in the noumenal world: Suffering is impossible without separation.
If you can't understand the difference in above three truths, you have no chance to understand the true meaning of emptiness, or the Heart Sutra.

In the Heart Sutra, "無苦集滅道" (there is no suffering, there is no making of suffering, there is no secession of suffering, there is no path leading to secession of suffering) is stated. That's the ultimate dimension (noumenal world). For more details, listen to the following Thay's Dharma talk on "The Science of the Buddha" in "The Ground of Right View".
http://tnhaudio.org/tag/four-kinds-of-nutriments/page/2/
If you didn't understand the ultimate truth in the noumenal world (wholeness), it is the proof that you have not attained full enlightenment (Nirvana). I am convinced that the Buddha and Thay understood the ultimate truth in the noumenal world (wholeness). In other words, even if you understand the ultimate truth in the phenomenal world, if you don't understand the ultimate truth in the noumenal world, you can understand Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity but can not understand David Bohm's theory of the Implicate order and the Explicate order.

In the ultimate dimension, or in the noumenal world, there is no separation because of the extinction of all notions. So, in the ultimate dimension, or the wholeness, suffering is impossible. That is Nirvana.

Ultimate Truth

Ultimate Truth can only be noumenal? Are you sure? I understand that Ultimate Truth (non-duality or wholeness) can be touched both in noumenal world and phenomenal world if we are awareness (awakened consciousness). I also understand that all other animals, plants and minerals in the phenomenal world are touching the reality as it is because they don't think. They are subject to time and space but are "real". Of course, if we are ego, it's impossible to touch the Ultimate Truth. That's because what ego sees is what ego thinks.

In Buddhism, Emptiness is the Ultimate Truth and is explained in the Heart Sutra. In the Heart Sutra, I understand that two kinds of Emptiness is described, namely Emptiness in the phenomenal world and Emptiness in the noumenal world. Usually, Buddhists explain that Emptiness means "empty of separate existence (or self)". In other words, Emptiness means that all pairs of opposites are interdependent co-arising, namely two sides of the same coin. They are not two but are not one (non-duality).

And the first half of the Heart Sutra explains Emptiness as above. Meanwhile, the latter half of the Heart Sutra explains Emptiness as the noumenal world. It is described that in Emptiness nothing (no matter) can exist and no phenomena can manifest. I understand that's because there is no space and time in the noumenal world. If so, Voidness may be more proper than Emptiness.

Therefore, there can be two kinds of Ultimate Truths to transcend the duality in the two worlds. Namely, Ultimate Truth in the phenomenal world is interdependent co-arising (non-duality), and Ultimate Truth in the noumenal world is wholeness (monism). That's why some people may make distinctions between Voidness and Emptiness. Of course, in the ultimate dimension, there is only the noumenal world, and in the historical dimension, there is only the phenomenal world.

Someone said, "One presumes, given the way the question is formed, that the "Viewer" is perceiving from the "Ultimate" State, and can still differentiate from what is phenomenal and what is Noumenal." I understand that the viewer is awareness (awakened consciousness), so s/he can transcend space and time. In other words, there is no separation between the noumenal world and the phenomenal world for awareness. Awareness can touch the true nature of reality without perceiving. This can be explained well by the theory of quantum physics called the enfolded (implicate) order and the unfolded (explicate) order. Body enfolds into consciousness. And consciousness unfolds into body.

"NOTHING EXISTS and that I AM NOT!" is a good expression of the noumenal world without space and time. Someone said, "what was being viewed around me (the universe) was no more than a concept, that objects and things are not what they are said to be". My understanding is as follows: If our mind sees psychological, physical, physiological phenomena as objects, what we see is only a projection or reflection of mind, namely an illusion or a delusion. Meanwhile, if awareness attains insight, or a direct view of truth itself without mind, what we see is the true nature of reality. (for more details: http://compassion5151.blogspot.jp/2015/11/true-nature-of-reality.html)

For Voidness (full enlightenment), we (awareness) need to throw away all notions by touching the true nature of reality. One method is mindfulness, concentration and insight. (for more details: http://compassion5151.blogspot.jp/2015/11/words-and-concepts.html)

According to the Buddhist principle of the investigation called the separate investigation of the phenomenal and the noumenal, I challenged to translate the Heart Sutra based on two different approaches, namely the phenomenal approach and the noumenal approach. My free translation is based on the ultimate truth (emptiness) in the phenomenal world, or in the historical dimension, or in the explicate (unfolded ) order. Meanwhile, my ultimate translation (after 「是故空中」) is based on the ultimate truth (emptiness) in the noumenal world, or in the ultimate dimension, or in the implicate (enfolded ) order. We should not mix up the phenomenal and the noumenal. That's why I made two versions of translations.

Implicate order & Emptiness 内在的秩序と空

Do you know the formula for emptiness?
「空」の方程式をご存知ですか?

A is made of non-A elements. So, non-A is inside of A. So, A is non-A.
AはA以外からできています。従って、 A以外はAの中にあります。従って、AはA以外です。

Do you know the implicate order in quantum mechanics?
量子力学の内在的秩序をご存知ですか?

A enfolds into non-A. Non-A unfolds into A. So, A is non-A.
AはA以外へ包み込んでいます。A以外はAへ(包み込んだものを)開いています。従って、AはA以外です。

The implicate order in quantum mechanics is equal to interdependent co-arising in Buddhism.
量子力学の内在的秩序は、仏教の縁起(相互に依存し、共同発生)と同じです。

A means everything. So, everything is made of everything else.
Aは全ての物を意味します。従って、全ての物はその他全ての物からできています。

Everything else is inside of everything. So, everything is everything else.
その他全ての物は、全ての物の中にあります。従って、全ての物はその他全ての物です。

Everything enfolds into everything else. Everything else unfolds into everything.
全ての物は、その他全ての物へ包み込んでいます。その他全ての物は、全ての物へ(包み込んだものを)開いています。

In other words, everything enfolds into everything and everything unfolds into everything. This is called the wholeness.
つまり、全ての物は全ての物へ包み込んでいて、全ての物は全ての物へ(包み込んだものを)開いています。これがホールネス(完全性)です。

In other words, everything is made of everything. So, everything is inside of everything. Namely, everything is everything.
つまり、全ての物は全ての物からできていて、全ての物は全ての物の中にあります。即ち、全ての物は全ての物です。

In other words, you are me and I am you. We are all the same as the whole cosmos.
つまり、あなたは私であり、私はあなたです。私たちは全宇宙として、皆同じです。

When we understand this ultimate truth of emptiness, we are awakened, or enlightened.
私たちがこの究極の真理である空を理解する時、私たちは目を覚まし、悟りを開きます。

Furthermore, body is enfolding into consciousness and consciousness is unfolding into body.
更には、体は意識へ包み込んでいて、意識は体へ(包み込んだものを)開いています。

If the theory of implicate order is combined with E = mc 2, the body and consciousness will continue eternally.
内在的秩序の理論を、E = mc 2と組み合わせると、体と意識は永遠に継続することになります。

Reincarnation may be proved scientifically in the near future.
