Fortitude

"Sometimes things go wrong; that’s normal. But we have a saying in Tibetan, ‘Nine times fail, nine times try again'."
(From His Holiness the Dalai Lama's tweet on November 26, 2013)

This is the spirit of NEVER GIVE UP. Unexpected things happen in our life. Therefore, we have to overcome difficulties, no matter what happens.(My commentary)

Awakened values

"We all have the potential to show others love and affection, but as we progress in our materialistic world, these values tend to remain dormant. We can develop them on the basis of common sense, common experience and scientific findings. The response to the recent tragedy in the Philippines is an example of how such values are awakened; people helped simply because others are suffering and in need of support." (From His Holiness the Dalai Lama's facebook on November 26, 2013)

This is the unconditional love and compassion developed from biological factor love by the tragedy. It's our regret that our spiritual values are hardly developed without these tragedies. We usually put more emphasis on material values like money, power and status than spiritual values.(My commentary)

Never Give Up あきらめないで (Original)

No matter what is going on
Never give up
Develop the heart
Too much energy in your country
Is spent developing the mind
Instead of the heart
Be compassionate
Not just to your friends
But to everyone
Be compassionate
Work for peace
In your heart and in the world
Work for peace
And I say again
Never give up
No matter what is going on around you
Never give up

Contentment & Simplicity

"Because of the risks involved in indulging in unrestrained desire and greed we need to cultivate contentment and simplicity."
(From His Holiness the Dalai Lama's tweet on November 22, 2013)

We must restrain from too much desire and greed through contentment and simplicity in order to be happy. The balance between material value and spiritual value is vital.(My commentary)

Confidence & Efforts

"If we are demoralized, sad and only complain, we’ll not solve our problems. If we only pray for a solution, we’ll not solve our problems. We need to face them, to deal with them without violence, but with confidence - and never give up. If you adopt a non-violent approach, but are also hesitant within, you’ll not succeed. You have to have confidence and keep up your efforts - in other words, never give up." (From His Holiness the Dalai Lama's facebook on November 19, 2013)

Action based on self-confidence is important.(My commentary)

True compassion

"I believe compassion to be one of the few things we can practice that will bring immediate and long-term happiness to our lives."
(From His Holiness the Dalai Lama's tweet on November 19, 2013)

Compassion is the most powerful spiritual value. It brings us immense benefits immediately and in the long-term. However, we have to be careful that this compassion means unconditional love or unbiased compassion. Because this compassion is totally different from love and compassion with attachment, which depends on other's attitudes.(My commentary)

Science & Spirituality

Spirituality consists of consciousness and mind. Consciousness is the master or the enemy of human beings and creates spiritual value (mental health). Mind (Emotion: Brain) is the computer of human beings and creates physical health. On the other hand, the essential elements of Science & Technology are body and matter. Body is the machine of human beings and creates physical health. Matter is the tool for human beings and creates material or economic value.

Attitudes 態度

"Not only is your own happiness and welfare related to others, but the more you help them, the happier you will be."
(From His Holiness the Dalai Lama's tweet on November 14, 2013)

The important point is that our altruistic attitudes will make us happy. Altruistic attitudes means the care for the happiness of others. And self-centered attitudes which cause sufferings are opposite to altruistic attitudes. This message has nothing to do with rich or poor directly.(My commentary)

Key methods in Buddhism

The key methods in Buddhism to transform our mind from negative to positive are as followings:
1. Morality (ethical discipline) by mindfulness and introspection
2. Concentration by single-pointed and analytic meditation
3. Wisdom of emptiness (selflessness:interdependence)

Liberation from sufferings

Buddha was liberated from sufferings by understanding clearly that human 5 factors are also interdependent. That's because he understood the human structure and became able to control his disturbing mind which causes sufferings, like self-centered mind and destructive emotions. Human being is made from body, sense, emotion, will and consciousness, and each of them is interdependent as followings.

5 senses → emotion [delusion] → consciousness [reason] → will [motivation] → action [body, speech, mind] → consequence

The most important factor is consciousness [reason] which controls unconsciously arising emotion [delusion] . Consciousness [reason] transforms our negative emotions to positive emotions, and links with will [motivation] and action [body, speech, mind]. Then humans can be liberated from sufferings and be happy. Please refer to the Heart Sutra.

Old friend 旧友

"I try to treat whoever I meet as an old friend. This gives me a genuine feeling of happiness."
(From His Holiness the Dalai Lama's tweet on November 11, 2013)

This is the best practice of compassion. It sounds easy but is very difficult to do due to delusions through mental projections created by our attachment and anger.(My commentary)

Limits in spirituality

I feel the limit in spirituality these days because spirituality can't directly help in achieving economic gains. Ordinary people are combination of body and mind (including consciousness), so have to take care of both body and mind. But spirituality can help in achieving just spiritual value and good phisical health. Ordinary people need material value (foods, clothes, shelters), namely money, for survival. So, we have to make money through working. However, making money or profits is an exploitation based on greed. (If there is a compassionate business, it should be a non-profit business.) In this sense, any spirituality can't help in achieving economic gains. While spiritual world is driven by our compassion, this material world is driven by our greed, or self-centeredness. We should learn that our survival is achieved through other's sacrifice, because material or economic world is the zero-sum world.

Global responsibility

"Since we are increasingly interdependent it's time to develop a sense of global responsibility, to help each other and promote human values."
(From His Holiness the Dalai Lama's tweet on November 9, 2013)

Global responsibility means restraining from harming others and practice of compassion for the happiness of others. However, this is another too beautiful words. How can starving people do that only? We have to remind first that our own survival is the top priority.(My commentary)

Important things

Important things are the no more creation of negative actions by restraining from harming others and the creation of more forceful positive actions (than previous negative actions) by practice of compassion. So, it is vital to minimize the material value for survival and to maximize the spiritual value for happiness. The key methods are morality (ethical self-discipline) by mindfulness and introspection, concentration by single-pointed meditation and analytic meditation, and wisdom of emptiness (selflessness:interdependence).

Survival 生存

"We need to strengthen such inner values as contentment, patience and tolerance, as well as compassion for others. Keeping in mind that it is expressions of affection rather than money and power that attract real friends, compassion is the key to ensuring our own well-being." (From His Holiness the Dalai Lama's facebook on November 5, 2013)

In this world, inner values are vital for our survival and happiness. However, we also need economic values for our survival. (My commentary)

Peace or Survival?

"Great changes start with individuals; the basis of world peace is inner peace in the hearts of individuals, something we can all work for."
(From His Holiness the Dalai Lama's tweet on November 5, 2013)

HHDL's ghostwriteer wrote a beautiful words. However, many people in the world are facing economic difficulties for survival now. What we need is economic value because inner peace can't save our physical life by itself. World peace is for people's happiness, so individual survival is the top priority.(My commentary)

Survival or Happiness?

Body needs material value (money) for survival and Mind needs spiritual value (peace of mind) for happiness. In order to get material value (money), we have to be self-centered and will suffer. In order to get spiritual value (peace of mind), we have to be altruistic and will starve. Which will you choose if you can get either one of them? Survival+sufferings or Happiness+starvation?  My body wants to choose survival but my consciousness wants to choose happinessThat's why we definitely need middle-way.

5 aggregates

Please refer to URL below for the fine-tuned translation of the Heart Sutra. I translated 5 aggregates as "human" before, but this time translated as "5 factors that construct human being" (body, sense, emotion, will, consciousness). And I commented on those relations as followings.
sense [5 senses] → emotion [delusion] → consciousness [reason] → will [motivation] → action [body, speech, mind] → consequence [happiness or suffering]
I came to conviction that Buddha understood this human structure, mastered the method to control his emotions [delusion] by his consciousness [reason] and was released from all sufferings.

Mind and Action

"If we have a good heart and concern for others, our actions will be positive."
(From His Holiness the Dalai Lama's tweet on November 1, 2013)

A good heart and concern for others means love and compassion. Positive mind creates positive motivation and positive motivation brings positive actions.(My commentary)

Craving, Grasping and Addiction

As far as we have body and brain (emotions), we can't help having craving, grasping and addiction to some extent for our survival. Any sensory comfort like music, sports and sex are also addiction, or attachment.
These addictions are self-centered attitudes for materialistic or physical or sensory satisfaction which cause sufferings. So, the minimization of these self-centered attitudes with the maximization of Love and Compassion through universal moral ethics, will be the key for happiness.
