Secular ethics, or Compassion

We have to be careful that secular ethics, or compassion can remove unrealistic fear (based on self-centered attitude due to ignorance) but can't remove realistic fear (useful warning). In other words, we must remind ourselves that secular ethics, or compassion can solve spiritual problems but can't solve materialistic or economic problems which many humans face now. The present situation is that greedy, arrogant, obsessed people are facing spiritual problems and compassionate and altruistic people are facing materialistic or economic problems. So, what is the use of secular ethics or compassion? To help greedy, arrogant, obsessed people? Or to help compassionate and altruistic people? (If self-centered people transform their mind to be altruistic) Or both?

Century of Compassion

"We can make this a more peaceful century if we cherish non-violence and concern for others’ well-being. It is possible. If the individual is happier, his or her family is happier; if families are happy, neighbourhoods and nations will be happy. By transforming ourselves we can change our human way of life and make this a century of compassion." (From His Holiness the Dalai Lama's facebook on October 29, 2013)
Cf. https://www.facebook.com/DalaiLama/posts/10151727091987616

A question to H.H.Dalai Lama

I posted my comment (question) to HHDL as follows: (From 2:03:23)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGqNdwYfmCE#t=7416
"Hello! HHDL, Thank you for sharing live webcasts. You said yesterday that it's impossible to have fear if you make a pledge to serve others. Can you say the same thing if you are a begger now? You won't have realistic fear even though you are starving to death? If you are in danger of physical survival, I think it's very hard to say the same thing. I guess that you can say so because your physical survival is perfectly secured until your death. I hope you will answer to this question."

The reason why I asked the question is as followings. There are 2 types of fear, realistic fear (useful warning) and unrealistic fear (based on self-centered attitude due to ignorance). I know HHDL was actually talking about unrealistic fear but ordinary people must have misunderstood easily that they can remove realistic fear also. This is dangerous. I want HHDL to mention clearly that compassion can remove unrealistic fear but compassion can't remove realistic fear. So, we have to take proper actions to remove realistic fear.

Inner value

"The challenge today is to convince people of the value of truth, honesty, compassion and a concern for others."
(From His Holiness the Dalai Lama's tweet on October 29, 2013)
Cf. https://twitter.com/DalaiLama/status/395119934377701376

Today's people put more emphasis on material value like money, power and status than inner value like above. Therefore, people need to be convinced of the inner value to be really happy. (My commentary)
Cf. http://www.slideshare.net/compassion5151/wisdom-20948408

The perfect balance of body and mind

Please refer to my rough view as follows:
http://www.slideshare.net/compassion5151/moral-crisis-english
I think the key word is "the middle way". The perfect balance of body and mind may be different from person to person. As for me, the combination of the reasonable material value for physical survival and the maximum spiritual value for mental satisfaction could be the perfect balance of body and mind. Please share your view on this issue.

Body and Mind 心と体

How can humans balance body and mind?  Your frank opinion will be welcomed!

Human being is a combination of body and mind. (Mind includes consciousness.) We need material value for our physical survival and have to face self-centered arrogance, greed and attachment, which cause sufferings. We need spiritual value for our mental survival and have to cultivate humility, contentment and compassion, which bring us happiness. These two values are contradictory but we need both of them for our body and mind.
Cf.http://www.slideshare.net/compassion5151/universal-moral-ethics-9886065

Compassion and Self-centeredness

"Once we have a firm practice of compassion our state of mind becomes stronger which leads to inner peace, giving rise to self-confidence, which reduces fear. This makes for constructive members of the community. Self-centeredness on the other hand leads to distance, suspicion, mistrust and loneliness, with unhappiness as the result." (From His Holiness the Dalai Lama's facebook on October 21, 2013)
Cf. https://www.facebook.com/DalaiLama/posts/10151710537002616

Practice of compassion is the source of happiness and self-centeredness is the source of unhappiness. (My commentary)

Potential to good 善への可能性

"Mentally, physically and emotionally we are the same. We each have the potential to good and bad and to be overcome by disturbing emotions such as anger, fear, hatred, suspicion and greed. These emotions can be the cause of many problems. On the other hand if you cultivate loving kindness, compassion and concern for others, there will be no room for anger, hatred and jealousy." (From His Holiness the Dalai Lama's facebook on October 14, 2013)
Cf. https://www.facebook.com/DalaiLama/posts/10151696873477616

Happiness 幸福

"I usually say the aim of life is to be happy. Our existence is based on hope. Our life is rooted in the opportunity to be happy, not necessarily wealthy, but happy within our own minds. If we only indulge in sensory pleasure, we’ll be little different from animals. In fact, we have this marvellous brain and intelligence; we must learn to use it." (From His Holiness the Dalai Lama's facebook on October 8, 2013)
Cf. https://www.facebook.com/DalaiLama/posts/10151686071327616

There are 3 levels in happiness. 1st level happiness is sensory pleasure or physical satisfaction like sport, music, sex. 2nd level happiness is attachment or emotional satisfaction like conditional love and motherly love. 3rd level happiness is mental satisfaction like unconditional love.

"We need to be clear which emotions are harmful and which are helpful; then cultivate those that are conducive to peace of mind. Often, due to a lack of knowledge, we accept anger and hatred as natural parts of our minds. This is an example of ignorance being the source of our problems. To reduce our destructive emotions we strengthen the positive ones; such emotional hygiene can contribute to a healthier society." (From His Holiness the Dalai Lama's facebook on October 1, 2013)
Cf. https://www.facebook.com/DalaiLama/posts/10151673794267616
